Safety guidelines

For hikers without fear of heights, sure-footed, and highly experienced in high alpine terrain; excellent physical condition, comprehensive mountain experience, alpine climbing equipment, safety and orientation tools, good weather conditions recommended. Please observe the current weather report

Hiking difficulty

Extremely steep terrain - this may include long climbing sections (II - III UIAA), extremely steep grassy slopes, steep snowfields and glacier passages. Usually pathless, very exposed terrain, with an increased risk of falling over extended stretches.

Additional information

Did you know that…

...the stepped section between Hochstubaihütte and Seekarsee is called Himmelsleiter because when climbing it you have the feeling of climbing into the sky?

SAFE ACROSS THE ETERNAL ICE

From the hut, you first hike in the opposite direction along the access route via the Seekarsee. Here you go down the Himmelsleiter (sky ladder) (ropes and stone stairs facilitate the passage). Tip: The Himmelsleiter gives the feeling of climbing into the sky. Then it goes flat out to an emergency shelter (key hangs next to the door) before the trail descends in steeper terrain to the Seekarsee. Below the lake, turn left and take the path towards the east. After the swampy spur of the Warenkar, the path winds in switchbacks up to the Windachferner. You descend onto the glacier and follow the path up to the Jochdohle restaurant. On the Gaiskarferner, you go southeast down to a rock ridge until you continue downstream to reach the Hildesheimer Hut.

Public transit

Travel comfortably and safely by train to Ötztal train station. The final stop or exit point is ÖTZTAL station. Afterwards, you travel comfortably and quickly with public transportation or local taxi companies through the entire valley to your destination.
