Prehistoric camp site

A splendid travel back in time to the Stone Age: under this large overhanging boulder, it is easy to enter the world of hunters and shepherds who lived between the 8th and 4th millennium BC.

At 2,050 m above sea level, “Hohler Stein” forms a sheltered place that prehistoric people used time and again in the summer to build fireplaces, collect hunting prey and make tools and weapons. Blades, arrowheads, scrapers and drills were made from precious flint stone of the northern lake Garda region. It is quite possible that “Ötzi” also knew about this shelter as the place where his body was found is only about 12 km away.

How you get there: From Vent you cross the bridge of Niedertalbach mountain brook and follow the trail towards Martin Busch Hütte. After overcoming the first steep section, you will reach an eye-catching fork in the following flat section after about 20 minutes on foot from Vent (signposts). Then continue on a narrow path through the dense stone pine forest, it takes you up to “Hohler Stein” hunters’ camp in about 2 minutes.
