STAGE 10:

LÄNGENFELD –> Winkelbergsee –> Wurzbergalm –> Köfels –> UMHAUSEN

A SMALL PARADISE FORMED BY A LANDSLIDE

The valley floor of Längenfeld presents itself in lush green and with a dreamy expanse stretching over 20 kilometers. The Lehner Waterfall is also a scenic marvel: a considerable amount of mountain water crashes 80 meters deep into the gorge. Benches and wooden platforms invite you to rest and offer a magnificent panorama over the endless expanse of the place. A massive landslide over 10,000 years ago left still visible traces and a paradisiacal flora and fauna throughout the landslide area. In the middle, a jade-green shallow mountain lake, gentle structural staging makes children's eyes grow bigger. At Winkelbergsee, the small water park, and the adjoining geo- and animal nature trail, there is always action.

Slightly above the lake, nestled between alpine pastures and mountain forests, lies Wurzbergalm. The many sounds and smells of the forest accompany us further to the small village of Köfels, which lies on a high plateau and was formed due to the Köfels landslide. The stage destination is soon reached, in the valley town of Umhausen.

Recommended maps

Kompass hiking map (available at the Ötztal Tourism information offices)

The hike passes the Längenfeld campsite, along the Ötztaler Ache towards Lehner-Au. With a constant view of the mighty Lehner Waterfall, the path leads after a while to the left over the fields to the edge of the forest. Soon you turn left again and reach a forest road that leads to Winkelbergsee.
If you follow the signs further towards Wurzbergalm, you can either take the wide forest road or the narrow mountain path, which branches off to the left after about 25 minutes of walking.
From Wurzbergalm, you turn right along an old forest road and continue hiking to Köfels. From Köfels, you descend in switchbacks through sparse forest on a hiking trail until you reach the Ötztaler Ache.
Crossing the Ötztaler Ache and the federal road, you walk a short distance parallel to the street before a small forest path leads uphill to the hamlet of Arzwinkel. There, you cross the Niederthaier Landesstraße and stroll through a small wooded area to the busy Bischoffsplatz and from there to the town center of the municipality of Umhausen.

Public transit

Travel comfortably and safely by train to the Ötztal train station. The final stop or exit point is the ÖTZTAL station. Then you can travel conveniently and quickly with public transport or local taxi companies throughout the valley to your desired destination.
