Mountain huts & chalets Austria

Stop-over spots

Stop-over spots from rustic to modern

There is no room for haste on the sun-kissed terraces and parlor benches of typical Ötztal mountain huts and pastures. Instead, the rustic mountain feeling spreads while the hut tenant serves fresh and regional delicacies. By the way, rumors are going about that bacon dumplings, shredded pancake & more taste even better on the mountain – and it's really true. Anyone can try it out as some alpine inns, snack stations and mountain restaurants can also be reached by cart road or mountain railway, while other huts and alpine pastures can only be reached by using your calves traditionally.

Alpine huts and pastures – a longed-for destination to escape from everyday life

It doesn't matter whether it's rustic like on faded black-and-white photographs or modern with lots of glass, wood and a flair for design: every pasture hut in Ötztal has its very own charm. Just as every hut tenant – be it female or male – stands for unique hospitality. It must be because of the fulfilling meaning of their activities that they remain so cordial despite long working days - the hut tenants are very often cooks, waiters, farmers, cattle breeders or shepherds in one person. Usually, several generations of a family help to take care of the cattle, produce their own farm goods such as cheese and butter and decorate the hut as a beautiful hiking destination. There is almost always time for a short chat with the hikers. Favorite topic? Of course, the hard but beautiful life on the alpine pasture!

The following list contains all stopover destinations on Ötztal's mountains – use the filter function for an even quicker search for the favorite destination.

Frequently asked questions about mountain huts in Austria

Originally, the rustic alpine huts in Austria were plain and simple accommodations for shepherds and herdsmen who lived on the mountain during the summer months to look after the cattle and other farm animals. Most of the alpine huts are scattered across the mountain meadows or can be found together in a small pasture village. Austria's alpine farmers make an important contribution to preserving the valuable cultural landscape above the tree line. In addition to agricultural use, alpine pastures also serve as recreational areas by promoting local tourism. Many alpine huts within Ötztal also comprise an inn and offer visitors tasty hut fare made from own or regional products. Let yourself be inspired by the fascination of alpine pasturelands!
According to "Almwirtschaft Österreich" association, there are currently over 8000 alpine pastures spread across the country. More than 2000 of them can be found in Tirol. Grazing meadows and alpine pastures together with mixed pastures make up a large part, and there are also milk, sheep and horse pastures.

Of course, it varies depending on the region, season and type of accommodation. The spectrum ranges from plain dormitories with a shared bathroom to modernly equipped double rooms. Both minimalists and mountain lovers with a certain need for comfort will find a suitable accommodation in scenic Ötztal. It is best to request at the hut of your choice to find out about the catering options and prices. Special tip: a reservation is not only recommended during peak season. Alpine Club members often receive a discount!

While they attract ski tourers or tobogganers to the warm oven in winter, they welcome hikers to the sunny terrace during the summer months.
