Tobogganing

On your sled, get set, go!

The rush of speed may well be one of the reasons why tobogganing in Tyrol has become so popular. In wintry Ötztal, the classic toboggan - apart from the skis - has proven to be the best means of transport to get down the mountain swiftly. The choice of routes includes a wide selection, ranging from family-friendly to challenging, accessible on foot or comfortably uphill by mountain lift.

Jamboree on the toboggan

The 12 toboggan runs meander down the Ötztal mountains on some 40 kilometers. Families will find suitable runs at the entrance to the valley. The holiday villages offer varied routes, even in the high mountains there are some highlights waiting for you. If you didn’t bring your own toboggan, you can of course rent it. Great action on speedy runners is guaranteed also at night.

Of course, tobogganing has to be learned first. But with a little practice, children can also master easy runs very well. Great advantage: the very little ones love to be pulled up on the toboggans, wrapped up in warm clothes, and for the older ones it’s simply a lot of fun to speed downhill again.

Probably the easiest yet most scenic route in Ötztal can be found in Oetz. The approx. 1 kilometer long run starts right at lake Piburger See. Parents and kids can cover the distance in a very short time. Special tip: For night owls, the toboggan run is illuminated in the evening until 11.00 pm.

The toboggan run at Feldringalm is also very suitable for families. Despite the steep ascent to the Sattele car park at 1700 meters above sea level, the path meanders initially flat, then gently uphill. All family members can complete the 2 kilometer long route in about an hour. Once at Feldringalm, you enjoy a leisurely refreshment stop before you return.

Lift-assisted tobogganing

Tobogganers in Ötztal do not necessarily have to climb the path on foot. Also mountain lifts take you to the trailhead of some toboggan runs. For example, the new toboggan run from Gaislachkogl middle station in Sölden. The uphill ride on Gaislachkogl Gondola I is available to holders of a valid skipass, a toboggan ticket or a single ride ticket. It is illuminated once a week in the evening. Covering a length of 7.3 km, it is one of the longest toboggan runs in Austria. There are also toboggan runs accessible by mountain lifts in Hochgurgl and Vent.

FAQs tobbogganing

Basically, a toboggan can be steered best by shifting weight. Additionally, you press your lower legs against the so-called runners bow. The steering rope attached to the end of the runner can also be used to control this piece of sports equipment. If you want to brake on flat terrain, simply press both feet into the snow close to the runners. If the terrain becomes steeper, you should also lean back while braking and pull the toboggan up at the front - this is how you brake with the runners at the back. Scenic Ötztal offers myriad scenic and easy toboggan runs to further improve your steering technique.

Let's start with appropriate footwear: Ideally, you should wear waterproof winter hiking boots with grip sole. When it comes to clothing, you should stick to the so-called "onion principle", which means that you wear several (thin) layers on top of each other. The first layer should be moisture-repellent and breathable thermal underwear. Depending on the temperature, you can also wear a fleece pullover or a softshell jacket over it. The outer layer comprises a ski jacket and ski pants. Ski socks and a woolen hat are as well a must. Special tip: When it snows, ski goggles make it much easier to make out the toboggan run during the downhill adventure. The expert Ötztal sports shops offer everything you need to be prepared for ultimate tobogganing fun.
