A time travel back to mining history

The scenic Miners Trail in the Hochoetz-Kühtai pasture region takes you back some 350 years, when pitmen mined chalcopyrite, pyrite and galena by using their own physical strength. Up to 400 miners worked at an altitude of 2500 meters, after shredding the ore they had to transport it with mules and horses down to the valley floor. Their life and work is displayed along the Miners Trail leading from Hochoetz to Kühtai - featuring several information boards and the Miners House. Varied access points of the loop walking route are easily accessible by car or public bus.

The Miners House - a gem worth seeing

The Miners House at 2002 m above sea level near idyllic Lake Puchersee was reconstructed on the original site in 17th century style. In the building's front part hikers learn interesting facts about everyday life of miners and their hard work, after exhausting climbs they will find comfortable rest and shelter. The second part of the Miners House hosts a small museum which can be visited as part of a guided hiking tour. Mining figures, mining car, varied tools, pictures and much more testify to the mining period in Wörgetal where traces have survived many centuries.

In the immediate vicinity of the Miners House there was a stamp mill and a processing area in which the ore was manually separated from the waste rock. Once the ensemble of buildings also included a sieving plant which was also rebuilt in its original location.

Please note: A visit to the Miners House ("Knappenhaus") is only possible as part of a guided hiking tour. Contact: oetz@oetztal.com
