Vernagthütte stands on a lateral moraine of Großer Vernagtferner. From the refuge follow Seufertweg to Breslauer Hütte at the foot of Ötztal’s Wildspitze. Most of the time the trail winds its way along the slopes above Rofental. From Vernagthütte you walk down and continue on a trail that branches off to your left, descending towards River Vernagtbach. From here you have superb views of Großer Vernagtferner with Hochvernagtspitze to the north/northwest, and a wonderful interplay of colors with green meadows in the valley, auburn rocks (e.g. the steep rockface below Hochvernagtspitze) and whitish-gray ice fields. Cross River Vernagtbach and continue to the flat meadows on Platteiberg. The trail crosses Platteikar and rolls up and down through Mitterkar. Just above Mitterkar you can see Ötztal’s Wildspitze, which looks unusually rocky from this angle. From here it’s only a few more meters down to Breslauer Hütte. The beautifully located refuge affords fantastic views of Kreuzspitze, Hochjochferner and majestic Weißkugel.
