INTERESTING FACTS

Difficulty levels of via ferratas

The via ferratas spread all over the Ötztal have been categorized by Kurt Schall according to a five-part scale, ranging from A (easy) to E (difficult).

A – easy:

Easy and secured trails. Sections with easily accessible (longer) ladders or (short) vertical step ladders, hand rails and iron cramps. Single sections can be quite exposed but they are still easy to handle. Suitable for surefooted hikers with a good head for heights. Via ferrata climbing set and belaying equipment are not required. Suitable for beginners.

B - moderate:

Steep rock formations with some exposed and considerably precipitous stages. Longer vertical step ladders, iron cramps and footholds. Good physical shape and enough stamina required. Also experienced hikers should use belaying equipment.

C - difficult:

Steep to very steep rocky terrain. Most sections are very precipitous and extremely exposed. Sometimes with slightly overhanging step ladders. Distance between ice cramps and footholds can vary considerably. Excellent physical shape and enough stamina required.

D - very difficult:

Vertical and mostly overhanging terrain. Considerable distances between single hooks, cramps and pitons. Very exposed sections secured only with thin steel ropes. Strong arms, expert climbing technique and an excellent physical shape plus enough training units are absolutely required. Some stages with easy but not secured climbing sections.

E - extremely difficult:

Mostly overhanging rock formations. A high level of muscle strength, excellent climbing technique, great ability and courage are absolutely required. Suitable only for experienced via ferrata climbers. Enough training units and perfect physical shape necessarily required. Rock climbing slings for short breaks are strongly recommended! Similar requirements as listed in D but on a much higher level.
