Waalweg Fundus / Köfler Waal

The so-called "Waal" trails are manmade irrigation ditches for high Alpine meadows and pasturelands. Due to its exposed location at 2,100m the "Köfler Waal" amid Fundustal ranks among the unique highlights in Tirol. Within the entire area you can still admire a variety of such deeply rooted "Waal" routes reminding of the past

Loop Hike:
Starting point: Köfels car park
In Köfels you follow the walking trail towards Frischmannhütte. Walking past "Schachtele" area further on along Waalweg Fundus, you can choose between two alternatives: either you hike down to the valley or you take a taxi.
Walking time: approx. 3.5 hrs
Difficulty level: intermediate

Arzwinkel Waalweg

Starting at Bischofsplatz car park (next to Ötzi Village) you continue to the Kneipp station. Proceed across the forest until you reach the century-old, manmade water ditch leading to the Stuiben Waterfall. The narrow footpath, parallel to the broader forest trail, joins the road again after approx. 1km.
 
Still today these old irrigation ditches play an important role when it comes to high Alpine farming. walking along the former water routes you will get an insight into deeply rooted traditions. Benches invite you to enjoy a rest and the scenic views of the surroundings.
